This is the best explanation of the differences that I've read.
Please, if you aren't sure that you know the differences, take a few minutes to read this. This is not an attempt to influence anyone's opinion about Iraq. I read it and I'm still opposed.

Wow, you people certainly are fast readers. Don't even bother to read this Republican Professor's explanations. Don't even bother to try and understand that the average Muslim is just as much a target as you and I. Don't bother to attempt to understand why Jihadist kill Muslims without a second thought.

barbiegirl, Thanks for taking the time to read this and respond, but I'm not sure that you understand the differences yet. If you did, you wouldn't still be considering all Muslims to be Jihadist.

bruce, I was born and raised in this country. My grandparents immigrated here from Germany in 1887. My father fought in the second world war and I am a Christian.
I don't have a clue what you are, but I know that your response tells me all I need to know about you.

I understand Jihad to mean struggle of some kind. A Muslim follows Islam and the terms Islamist and Jihadist are relatively recent terms of American origin.
I thought the article was fascinating. It didn't mention too much about the possible affects of the war in Iraq (and how it may have made extremists more extreme) though did it? I thought that was a very interesting omission. It would be interesting to see the results of studies into other fundamentalist groups. I'm sure extremism isn't limited to Islam and can be found in many religious and political groups.

A good report. It does not mention the problems caused by the Human Rights Act and the need to change the position regarding the status of political refugees. The liberal attitude of the West are being used against them. This creates the danger of a backlash within the Western world.

as every one does what one's religion wants him to do just like that muslim is the one who is becomes jihadist when o non muslim tries out his patience by not respecting his religion since he is taught to stay quiet unless he is attacked but when a un armed muslim living in his own place own country own home is forced to leave his place his shelter by an armed nonmuslim who not only kills his dear ones but also tear thier honor and also destroys his worship places , he becomes a jihadi which then becomes obligatory.

That was an interesting and educational reference. It really explains what the Muslims want to do to take over the world and their followers with them. It's hard to believe they are living amongst us right now and when and where will they attack next. I have faith in our military and law enforcement to protect us from this sort of thing. I am not going to live in fear and make it ruin my life. I will live as usual. Democracy and Republic all the way!!!!!

There is no such thing as an "Islamist." A Muslim is a person who practices Islam. A Jihadist is a Muslim who has waged a "holy war."

strike_ea has obviously never heard of Northern Ireland.
Probably an American who hasn't heard of Noraid either!
A Muslim practises Islam.
A Jihadist is a western term for someone embarking on a holy war! (Seems an oxymoron to me.)
An Islamist is a term invented by the Pentagon to justify their illegal war.

Islam is the religion, a Muslim is a practitioner of that religion and Jihad is a mandate ( or call) for war.

There is no difference.
Islam preaches hatred of non-believers. Read the sacred Islamic texts, the Bukhari Hadiths. They discuss Muhammad's violent life and how he instructed his followers to kill non-believers and take their wives as sex slaves.
Jihadist is a major obligation of a Muslim. Jihad has been waged continuously against Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, Jews and atheists since it was only founded 1400 years ago.
