The idea of the war in Iraq wasn't wrong. Saddam was as brutal as any creature that our species has ever spawned, and the politics of the entire Middle East is riddled with somewhat less evil versions of him (King Abdallah, Asad of Syria, Hosni Mubarak, etc.). The wrongness of the war came in its execution. Pres. Bush and the people around him thought they could do it on the cheap, and we never invested the military and other resources necessary to cement a lasting victory. Their wishful thinking and willful incompetence are seriously criminal, IMHO.

As for oil, it will always be a sub-text for anything that goes on in Iraq or anywhere in the Middle East. Although we did not fight the war to guarantee reserves or contracts for Halliburton or other oil-related companies, it's the presence of oil and the revenue it represents that makes Iraq (as well as Iran, Saudi Arabia, etc.) strategically important. If these countries weren't sitting on the most easily accessible energy supplies in the world, they would for the most part be--to use the century-old wording of a British diplomat--tribes with flags.

In sum, the war was a potentially good idea gone horribly wrong, with heart-rending consequences for many of our brave men and women in uniform as well as the Iraqi people.

God bless your friends and family in the service.

No, There are plenty of soldiers and civilians who completely support the government and its decision to continue this campaign in Iraq.
