This shape of the pack would closely resemble an upside-down capilal U. I have had the backpack since my college freshman year and would like to have it functioning the best it can. The zipper will just split open when you have it closed, and has been doing so more now than ever. Is it possible to fix this zipper? If not, can it be replaced with a new one? All answers will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, zippers can be fixed or replaced. Many times the company who made it will fix it. Look for their website. You can also try a back pack supplier in your area.

Since there are many reasons a zipper won't work, and many different kinds of zippers, your question can't be answered directly, but I have provided links to places where you can find the answer.
