If you're downloading the movies for free, how to you expect them to make a profit?

The act of downloading them is not illegal. Possessing an unlicenced (ie. unpaid for) copy is. Supplying a copy, licenced or not, to another person is also illegal.

By the same token, lending a DVD you've bought to your friend is also illegal but in practice impossible to police.

i've know ever since i saw an add before the movie came on that said it was illegal. the ironic part was, that my dad got the movie from his friend who pirated it on the internet.(it was the family guy movie, and at that time it wasn't out yet)

Hello, it's called copyright laws, the same ones that apply to stealing songs from the Internet without paying, or pirating/copying software, etc.

No, I thought James Cameron raised $200 million to make Titanic specifically so that people could steal it from him on the Internet.

I mean, the selfish turd.

Yeah, there's an ad on every DVD you buy now... kinda the wrong place to put it really, because if you're downloading them, you're not going to be buying them.
