if that is true, why is the American and British embassies reporting record numbers of requests from Venezuelans for VISA'S?

Middle-class Venezuelans are queuing to leave the country amid fears that its president, Hugo Chavez, is laying the ground for a dictatorship.

Opponents of his "20th century socialism" are so desperate to escape that they have resorted to learning new languages and tracking down long lost European relatives in the hope of securing a visa.
At the US Embassy, visa enquiries have almost doubled in recent weeks, from 400 to about 800 a day. "There are normal spikes toward Christmas or another major holiday, but this increase doesn't fall into that category," said embassy spokesman Brian Penn.
The British embassy has seen a similar rise in numbers. "It has been increasing for some time, but what's different now is the tone of desperation," said a British spokesman.
A website for would-be emigrants - mequieroir.com (I want to leave.com) - reports that since Mr Chavez's December 3 election victory, and his announcement last month that he would nationalise the telecommunications and electricity industries, the number of daily visits it receives has soared from 20,000 to 60,000.
"You're getting more families, who are worried about their children's futures," said Esther Bermudez, who runs the site.
At the Italian Culture Institute, registration for Italian language classes is up 20 per cent year on year. Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have Spanish, Italian or Portuguese relatives who emigrated there after the Second World War.
Ernestina Hidalgo, 40, whose husband is a Spanish citizen, said that she was hoping that their two teenage children would also be granted Spanish citizenship. She said an "enabling law", passed by the National Assembly 10 days ago, granting Mr Chavez 18 months of rule by decree, was the final straw.
"Chavez doesn't accept political dissidence," said Mrs Hidalgo. "Why do they need an enabling law if they already have an absolute majority in the National Assembly?"
The enabling law gives Mr Chavez free rein over 11 strategic policy areas, including defence and energy. In January, Mr Chavez said that he intended to nationalise the telecommunications and electricity industries, as well as take a larger share of oil operations in the Orinoco River belt, which produces 600 billion barrels per day.
He has also said he will not renew the broadcasting license of RCTV, an opposition TV channel.

Chavez apparently does not like Obama based on the fact that Chavez called him an ignoramus. Prior to that Obama said that Chavez exported terrorism and obstructed progress in Latin America. I don't think they're quite as friendly as you are trying to allege so my answer is, no.

I don't really know. Could be because he'd bought & stockpiled weapons at the rate of 10 for every Venezuelan some years back and keeps buying. He admired Saddam and Fidel and sucked up to Ahmadinejad. Maybe he wants to be the first western nuclear power south of the equator. He's ruined Venezuelans' economy, declared himself Dictator for Life. He's 'nationalized' infrasctructure built by others and threatens them if they dare speak out about it being flat wrong to even be told they *might* get a few cents on the Dollar for their investment. There is no free press/media nor freedom of speech, same as Iran. He has stolen Venezuelans' oil for his own plans while tossing bones to Venezuelans. Venezuela has troops over the borders into EVERY adjoining nation.
What's not to like!

Yeah, the election was fine but he's a tin pot dictator who loves the limelight and who wants nothing more than to insult and eventually damage the USA. His current gift of dictatorial powers is going to come back and smack Venezuela in the face when he starts shutting newspapers, exiling or jailing dissidents and acting like the Mugabe of South America. Populist politicians like him often use the ignorance of the poor to keep them in power. This guy is trouble.

It is not what he is doing now. it is his future that scares me. When you control the media in a country, you control information. Did you know he closed down his political enemies parties newspaper down. isn't the freedom of speech important to you. civil rights of the people will go and the average life of the people will eventually decline. What looks like roses at the beginning will rot and smell like dying animals.

Oh, the guy who donates and sells at below market value his oil to the people of the North East so they can heat their homes in winter.
Because he likes to help poor people but is really insane and wacky with his other political views.

capitalists feel threatened by communist/socialist types. always have always will. especially when the capitalists are forced to sell their largest source of income in a country.
they get scared when a threat to them maintaining their system of exploitation is disrupted. What really started the propaganda war, is when he seized unused pasture land from the rich and divided it up among people that would put it to use.
but i will have to say, Hugo Chavez didn't score any points in my book creating a fund with the president of Iran to help fund anti-American economic actions.
