A Summons is a formal legal notice of suit and is issued to the defendant(s) involved in the lawsuit. It is usually accompanied by the Complaint. (Summons and Complaint). A Summons informs the defendant(s) as to how long they have to respond to the claims of the plaintiff (person filing complaint).

A summons is an order for you to appear in court to give your testimony. You have to attend or they can, and usually will, order a bench warrant for your arrest.

A notice requiring you to appear in court on a certain day and time. Do not miss it or you will have a warrant out for your arrest. The judge can also order a deputy to pick you up from either work or home and bring you to court.

A legal document meaning you must appear before the court or you must submit something to a court. This is different than a subpoena, as some are indicating they are the same thing.
