I think the best place to stay is on strip, preferably central strip area around Flamingo Rd. Then you are in the middle of everything. Everything is very close, though. My favorite hotel is Paris, depending on when you're going you might get decent pricing there.
I don't recommend Stratosphere, its old and out of the way. If you don't mind being further North on the strip, and want to save money, go with Sahara. You can catch the monorail directly from Sahara so you can avoid getting ripped of by cab drivers.
Look at the map below to see where all the hotels are on the strip.

Fremont Street is actually 2 or 3 miles beyond the north end of the Strip. Since you want to party and sight-see, definitely the central Strip. The Venetian, Caesars, Mirage, etc. are all walking distance from each other and what you want to see. You can always take a bus, trolley, or whatever to go farther. (See this link for info on these:) http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/transportation.cfm
A good tip: many off-strip hotels have shuttles to the Strip. Check the website of the Tuscany or whichever hotel you're looking at. Strip hotel rooms are priced about $135/night average, now, except for the older and shabbier places.

Las Vegas is a town that's something for all so find it with hotelbye . Las Vegas is a town with great attractions and one particular could be the famous Las Vegas Strip; where tourists may have a go in the hot desert evening, or have a stroll downtown and see a amazing mild reveal that spans a whole street, the Fremont Street Experience. Guests also can get a view of wonderful world popular re-creations like erupting volcanoes, the Eiffel Tower and the Sphinx of Egypt in front of the various hotels and casinos. Las Vegas is really a city that continually reinvents it self, therefore even though you have already been here before you'll never go out of fun things to do.

I've been to Vegas twice. The first time I stayed on the strip and the second time I stayed about a mile off the strip. Both hotels have their pros and cons. If you are looking at saving a few dollars and staying in a nice hotel off strip I would recommend The Orleans. You can book rooms from anywhere $25 - $89 depending upon the time of the year that you book. There is a free shuttle that runs from the hotel to the strip (the Golden Nuggett) numerous times throughout the day & evening. On strip, I stayed at the MGM Grand. Sign up on their website to get deals and specials through your email that are not available to the general public. It is a great place to stay as there is lots to see and do right there at the hotel. Have a great time and good luck!

My best time in Las Vegas was when I stayed on the strip at the Imperial Palace (across the central strip from Caesar's). I drove up from San Diego in the middle of the week, and had booked a single cheap room for me and my girlfriend (about $60). When we got there, they were all out of the room I had reserved a few weeks earlier, so they put us up into a suite which was much much nicer - great view of the strip, enormous lounge room, hot tub in the bathroom, and huge mirror on the ceiling above the bed (very nice).
It's also right around a lot of the great casinos and nightclubs. Definitely see the fountain shows at the Bellagio (I think they're every half-hour), as well as browse a few pawn shops to pick up some really nice stuff that poor souls have gambled away.

If you stay at Golden Nugget, Four Queens or even the Plaza, you will be right at the Fremont Experience. You can go in and out of casinos without walking forever. There are plenty of places to party in that area and you can easily catch a taxi or bus to go to the strip if you want.

I've been to Vegas a couple of times and of all the placed I have stayed -- I would have to recommend Harrah's -- the view of the volcano at the Mirage rocks! Plus they have an awesome outside bar with bartenders that put Tom Cruise in cocktail to shame with the tricks they perform. Check out the light show @ the Bellagio - the indoor gardens at the Mirage - inside the Paris casino is cute -- the sirens show at Treasure Island - and make sure you check out the parade in the sky at Rio (all of these events are free -- even better!) For a paid show I would recommend Cirque du Soliel -- Ka or Zumanity (both were wonderful) Have fun!

I've stayed at the Paris Hotel on the strip. Check out Paris Hotel Las Vegas at http://maps.google.co.uk/
I've never had a shower cubical so large and it's a surreal bar/casino area that has no windows, a sky coloured ceiling with whites clouds painted on. I believe they also pump oxygen into the area to stop you getting sleepy & keep gambling. I'm not a gambler but we had a fantastic time
