You should use a calling card to get the best rates. They are quite competitive and the rates are cheap.

With price wars, the company with the "BEST" rates changes all the time. So, I would recommend not a company, but a system. The Call-back system is consistently cheaper than all the other traditional land line companies. I am with a company called Global-Call. The Rep, is named Simon T.

But from the US to Japan, as I said, the best rates change all the time, so you will have to just pick one and stick with it. If you took the company with the best rates all the time, you would be changing long-distance carriers every month. What a hassle.

Good luck.

what you can do is call your current long distance service provider and ask for their best rate for calling Japan. Ask for the terms of service and then call a competitor and compare. Or call the competition first, if the copetitor is higher then ask your current provider to match or make a better offer. Also ask for rates that include volume plans. So if you were to call for longer durations, the cost improves.

I myself use a combination of Skype, Skype Out and my home IP phone to call the USA from Japan.

Skype or calling cards usually have the best rate. Land lines are usually expensive.

I use the Mega Clean and Stable card. 3.2 cents a minute from calls from the US to Japan. The card expires in 2 yrs and unlike a lot of other cards it does not charge a fee every month. 3.2 cents a minute period no other charges. You can talk for 159 minutes on a $5 card. You buy them online and they will send you the instructions on making calls.
