My son is 5 months old also. We were only breastfeeding as well, and started baby cereal and fruit and veggie purees a couple of weeks ago. On the advice on my Pediatrician (and friends with babies) we started him on Gerber apple juice - mixed 50/50 with water. It clears him right out! The doc said it was completely normal.

This is very common for babies starting solids and is nothing to worry about. The common thing is to to try PRUNE juice, though this doesn't taste the best. Instead try PEAR juice. This is commonly used in retirement homes to keep old people regular and it tastes much much better. Just remember to dilute the juice first with bolied water.
Also, mashed bananas or pureed prunes should do the trick.

My daughter started on solids at 6 months and was exclusively breastfed until then. She had the same problems until I found out that it was her diet that was constipating. I try now to avoid constipating foods, the brat diet - bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast, and instead use oatmeal cereal and high fiber foods. I also give prunes every few days to keep her regular. Its made a huge difference. Good luck.

My son became constipated from the rice cereal he was eating. We switched over to the beginner oatmeal cereal and it cleared it right up. Baby prune juice may help as well.

don’t put your baby on any type of juice my doc told me that babies cant have it yet, what I do and a lot of other people I know do is go to any grocery store and get some molasses mild flavor (they use it to make gingerbread men) and dip a butter knife in it and let one drip fall in to the rice cereal and mix it up and give it to her. It will help her poop and it don’t hurt her its more like a sweet snack for her also prune baby food works to good luck also dont give her any honey or karo syrup its bad for them my doc told me so. also bannas are constapating foods

One problem mothersa have is starting the babies on rce etc. these are really not good for babies they are really full of starches, try this..smashed avacados..well blended. an excellent and healthy start. Babies taste buds have not developed fully so they will eat what you feed them (in case you said yuk to avacados)...one more thing...if you want to help little man along fix him a little bit of karo syrup in warm water..not real healthy but will help him release
