Marcelo Rios was a former world number 1, in fact the only one, not to ever win a Grand Slam singles title. His performances in 1998 were great. He won seven titles that year, of which three were Masters events and one was the Grand Slam Cup, and made the Australian Open final (losing to Petr Korda).

Jose Luis Clerc was an Argentine player mainly of the late 70's to early 80's who never won a Grand Slam singles title. He won 25 ATP titles, the most of any player (with American Brian Gottfried) not to win a Grand Slam singles title, and reached a career high ranking of number 4. He holds a record for one of the best performances in one months time. From July 13 to August 9 in 1981, he won four consecutive singles titles with 27 consecutive wins. A great clay court player who made the semi-finals of Roland Garros in 1981 and 1982.

Of the current players, I would say Davydenko is very much underrated. Many people believe he has such a great ranking (no. 3) and is not probably represented in the rankings in terms of skill because he plays more tournaments (32 in 2006) than any other player, and therefore collects points week in week out due to hard work. This is true, but he is a great tennis player no less. I think he is a player deserving of a Grand Slam singles title, and he just needs to better his record against the higher ranked players in the world.

Another current player is David Nalbandian. His game is brilliant, and he is a Wimbledon finalist and a four-time Grand Slam semi-finalist. He has shockingly only won five titles in his career, and he doesn't seem to play many tournaments (only 17 in 2006). Although he is a great all-round and all-court player, I think he will win the French Open one day because, traditionally, the other highly ranked players don't do as well on the clay courts.

As for the up-and-coming players, I agree with the person before who said Murray won't be long from winning a Grand Slam title. His potential is huge and he is the greatest current player, behind Roger Federer, who knows how to construct and win a point. He is somewhat of a genius! Other up-and-coming players with great potential include Tomas Berdych and Novak Djokovic. Also watch out for 18-year-old Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, and for a more experienced player, Dmitry Tursunov, who could have some of the most devastating ground stokes and serve.

Among men, I would say Miloslav Mecir. He had some big time wins over players like Lendl and Mats Wilander (he was the one who prevented Wilander from getting his single year Grand Slam in Wimbledon SF, 1998). Even his game style is pretty popular for his seemingly lazy movement but excellelent court coverage. There could be other names but since I was old enough to follow tennis, Mecir really stands out.

Among women, two years ago I would have easily told you Amelie Mauresmo....but I don't know who to name right now...perhaps Andrea Jaeger who had a career ending injury in the 80s when she was 19 after some grand slam final appearances...now she is involved in lot of social work.
