Obviously there's a clog somewhere - but where? And how do I fix it?

YOU don't, call a plumber right now because more than likely it is in the sewer lines were the city is most likely responsible (although they will never cop up to it). Take care of this now cuz if you don't you may end up with raw sewage on your floors from everything backing up into your house.

Well, its a good thing that you place your washing machine in your bathroom or it will be a disaster! The same thing happenned to me when we first moved into our rented house. What we did was call our housing agent and she phoned a plumber who came the next day and fixed the problem.If it wasnt for the plumber,our kitchen will still be soaking wet! The plumber said that the piping system was clogged so she replaced the pipe and asked us to buy limescale removal solution to clear the pipes of limescale which can cause blocks.

Dig a hole about the size of a 55 gallon drum and put one down there. Then change your drainage by running a flexible pipe from washer to 55 gal. drum. this way there's no clogging any where or any time, oh fill in around drum and put a piece of plywood over drum and dirt on top of it.

You need to use a snake to unclog it but if you don't have one the plumber does.

If you have a drain snake run it into the drain if not then look for the P trap.
