If intelligence is so beneficial, why are there so many stupid people around?

Here's a serious answer to your fun and interesting question:

Intelligence equates to mental skills. Think of them as the "software" in your brain computer that process the data of human experience. Mental skills such as perception, categorization, spacial recognition, logic, analysis, imagination, intuition, troubleshooting, idea generation, problem solving, evaluation, decision-making, planning and organization.

Now you see why there are so many stupid people. It's like chess, you may know the rules, but how well do you play the game? Or...maybe you don't even know the rules, right? The more you practice and improve mental skills, the more intelligent you'll become. The vast majority of people could give a big rat's behind about doing that...once again, why there are so many stupid people around.

Not so mysterious now, is it?...

Because even a retard can give birth, and most of the time people have sex, they select for physical attributes rather than mental.

If witnessing somebody construct a clever palindrome got it up for anybody, then maybe evolution would start working forwards again. Sadly, we are a petty and sensationalized culture where the lowest common denominator, (ie: instinctual pleasure) rules supreme in our attention span. Perhaps when governments cease to reach out to the mentally incompetent through welfare and job placement programs, the common retard will again be subjected to the rigors of environment and naturally selected against as they starved in the streets and outskirts of towns.

Below average intelligence most likely begats others with comparable brain capacity, though it is possible for a genius to be born into a family who "appear" to be less than their offspring. And brilliant people can produce "disappointing" children.
Though, it is better to hedge your bets, by mating with someone who is at least as smart as you, if not smarter.
Many who act stupid just aren't living up to their potential.
I don't like to label people, because some seemingly dumb people can do extraordinary things. You have got to learn to appreciate diversity.
