Led by Bash Brothers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, the Oakland A's swaggered into the '88 World Series, owners of 104 regular season wins and a four-game ALCS sweep of the Red Sox. The Dodgers, on the other hand, were a bunch of overachievers, riding Orel Hershiser and his 59-inning scoreless streak all the way to a division title and an upset of the powerhouse Mets in the NLCS. Most were predicting a quick and painless victory for the A's.

With two out and his team trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda had Dave Anderson -- who batted .249 with two homers during the season -- waiting in the on-deck circle to pinch-hit for pitcher Alejandro Pena. But at the last moment, Lasorda pulled Anderson in favor of Kirk Gibson.

Gibson, the National League's MVP that season, was on the bench with hamstring and knee problems. Gibson limped to the plate. After working a 3-2 count, Gibson sent one of the most memorable home runs in baseball history into the right-field stands for a Game 1 victory.

Gibson's limp-off home run was the first time a team had been trailing in a World Series game and homered to win in the bottom of the ninth. It was also Gibson's only at-bat of the entire Series. But it was enough, as the Dodgers rode the moment all the way to a World Series championship.

Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.

Fresh out of a 7 game NLCS against the Mets, The Dodgers headed into the series against the well rested A's, who everyone picked to beat them in either 4 or 5 games. The A's had all the hitting and pitching and breezed through their series against Boston. Kirk Gibson, the anchor of the team all year and known for playing through injury when possible, was out of commission with injuries sustained to both of his legs. Hershiser, their ace, could not start due to appearing 4 times in the NLCS including going the distance in game seven against the Mets. Instead, Lasorda went to rookie Tim Belcher against 20 game winner, Dave Stewart. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, trailing 4-3, Mike Davis on first, Lasorda sent in Kirk Gibson, who could hardly walk to the plate to pinch hit against Dennis Eckersley, coming off a 45 save season. Gibson worked him to a full count. Stepping out of the box, he remembered MLB scout, Mel Didier, mentioning that, in a clutch situation with the count full, Eckersley will go to the backdoor slider. It was the only pitch he was looking for and he got it. With a seemingly half swing, Gibson took Eckersley over Right/Center field to win the game and the place went bonkers.

Riding that momentum, the Dodgers took the Series 4-1. And that's just the abbreviated version. What can be better than that?

I could pick 2 games from the same series. !991 Mn vs ATL. Game 6 Kirby robs a home run in the game to extend the game Knoblauch dukes out Lonnie Smith in to not running the bases which leaves him on base so he cant score and in the end Kirby homers fist pumping with the final words were "We will see you tommorrow night!"

Game 7 goes ten innings where Jack Morris pitches maybe one of the most gut wrenching games in seriesr history winning 1-0

I would go with game 6 of the 1975 Series, which the Red Sox won on Carlton Fisk's home run in the bottom of the 12th inning. It also had the great Dwight Evans catch and throw, Bernie Carbo's pinch-hit home run (his 2nd of the Series), and the Reds throwing out the potential game-winner at the plate in the bottom of the ninth.

When the Boston Braves played the Yankees back in the 50's. The braves only had two good pitchers, Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain. Though they were arguably the two best in baseball, at that time, no one gave them a chance in a long series. Except for one Boston sports writer who coined a phrase still famous today. Goes, 'Spahn and Sain then pray for rain then Spahn and Sain again'. Spahn won game one and Sain game two in Boston. There was a day off then it rained for three days. Game three in NY went to Spahn and Game four to Sain. Boston swept in four games with just two pitchers. It doesn't get much better than that.

sure, I nonetheless imagine that become the perfect international sequence ever. the wide underdog beat the wide favourite with a house run in the bottom of the 9th of pastime 7. The underdog gained 4 video games to three video games and were outscored 38 - 3 of their 3 loses, yet nonetheless got here lower back to win. p.s. If the Yankees had ever gained a international sequence through hitting a house run in the bottom of the 9th of pastime 7, you recognize ESPN and Yankee followers would of indexed it because the most ideal international sequence ever, yet because the Yankees were those who lost the 1960 international sequence, it truly is basically over regarded. optimistically, the discovery and replay of the game movie will open human beings's eyes onto what the 1960 Pirates carried out.
