I used to work for a medium-sized company (approx. 150 people) where there was no dress code (I came in a tank top, shorts, and sandals), had a huge break room with all kinds of games (consoles, ping-pong, air hockey, foosball), and the company president hosted about 2 hours of basketball everyday during lunch at a local gym. Great place, low pay.

To me it's all about pay. I go home and play my Wii now anyways, and I twiddle my thumbs and answer Yahoo! Answers questions during the workday.

I've written s/w for big companies and small, and the small ones are much better, imo. Big companies get so political and people get funny if you make more money than they do. I was contracting for a large corporation and my boss found out I was making more than he was. That didn't go over too well.

It's nicer at small companies, but they don't always last. The best thing about contracting is that you can avoid much of the interoffice politics.

Oh, and dress code is different. In large corporations I had to wear a coat and tie even though I programmed behind a cubicle all day. At the smaller companies I wore shorts and t-shirts to work. Much more casual.

Done both, Fortune 200 and currently a small company with barely 200 employees. For me it's about the manager I work with and the growth of the company.

In my current situation I would prefer what I have in the small company because the managers are realistic, the growth is phenomenal and the people are real.
