A red neck is an unsophisticated rural person. They used to be called hillbillies. They are supposed to like country music, drive pick up trucks, have 4 or 5 dogs, and drink beer.

It's generally used as an insult. A stereotypical "redneck" is usually from the southern states, drives a pick-up truck, listens to country music, usually lower class white people. Also sometimes associated with being racist. Again, it's a derogatory term used to generalize a group of people.

A cliche: Driving pick up trucks with a rifle in the back, voting for Bush or worse, very patriotic, not very bright, extremely opinionated when it comes to Darwinism (is all a darned lie), abortion (kill the doctors) or liberal values (hang the swines),shallow gene pool, listening to Country & Western, farmers, more to be found in the south of the US, see also "hicks", "hillbilly"
