not everybody gets it, and if it ever did serve a purpose, it doesn't now. it may be a remnant of early human developement, such as the tailbone being the vestigial remains of an actual tail, if you believe in evolution. (yes, i do). mine went away,(the line, not the tail, i never had one of those :) ) but my daughter at two has that line, more noticeble after a summer of getting tan.

It is caused by pregnancy hormones that increase production of the pigment melanin. This is also known as hyperpigmentation. Fair-skinned women show this symptom less often than women with darker pigmentation. Before it appears it may be more faintly visible as a linea alba ("white line").

Linea nigra tends to appear around the second trimester and may or may not disappear within a few months after birth. Some research suggests there may be a link between linea nigra and insulin. Supplementing the diet with folic acid is said to reduce the discoloration.

There is an old wives' tale associated with linea nigra: if the linea nigra runs to the navel, it's a girl, and if it goes all the way up to the xiphoid, it's a boy.

Im sure there is no purpose... Id call it the skin's way of stretching to accomodate the quickly growing belly. Has to do with hormone secretion... The Dermis is amazing in that it can expand quickly by utilizing processes like this band you see... however it DOESN'T shrink quickly, doesn't that suck?! lol
As bad as it sounds- think of it as a big linear stretchmark (that will eventually go away after delivery!)
Don't fret though, pregnant bellies are beautiful after all!

im sure its called the linea negra, and not everyone gets it, im currently 32 weeks preg and i dont have it, some get a very dark line.
it doesnt actually have a purpose the reason its there on some people is due to the hormones present during pregnancy , i think the same reason you can get a "pregnancy mask" on your face across your cheeks where they appear darker skinned than the rest of your face.

The line on your pregnant belly is called the linea negra. This line is caused from hormones in your body. It serves no purpose.

Everbody has this line even when they are not pregnant. It is invisible.
When you are pregnant, the hormones make the line darken, the same hormones that can cause the mask of pregnancy. Not all women get the mask and not all womens line will darken!!
