It helps the grip on the blade of your stick, because some sticks don't have that good of a grip on their blades. Also, it helps the stick blade from cracking when you take a hard shot such as a slapper (slap shot).
Also, when you tape the stick at the top, it gives you a better grip if you don't have Super-Grip™ gloves or a Canadian® Flex-Grip. But if you don't have tape on you, pieces of rubber will help if you put them in the palm of your glove.
Sometimes people use different types of tape, depending who they are. For example, most girls or women would prefer pink tape. For army-loving people, there is camoflauge tape. Also, clear tape which you use to tighten up your socks is not recomended, because it doesn't have a good enough of a grip, it is very slippery. A.k.a - It's plastic.
If you go to your local Source for Sports™ or Canadian Tire®, go look in the hockey equiptment isle and look for different colored tapes. They have quite a selection.

I tape the top of the stick for better grip because it can get slippery! I tape the bottom of the stick so that it is easier to control the puck and when I recieve the puck it does not just bounce right back off it and I lose it!

As a current hockey player, I tape my blade in order to enhance my puck control and shooting abilities. That way I am given softer hands. Meaning, I can stick handle and retain passes more efficiently. Also, taping the blade from heal to tip causes the seam of the tape to provide friction onto the puck, resulting in more saucer-like passes and shots. When I play without tape I am more likely to mishandle passes and have bad timing when moving the puck.
Wood blades also need tape to keep from wearing down, but I use a graphite blade to prevent that.
For the top of the stick, I tape a knob onto it for better grip. That way the stick doesn't slip out of my hands and is easier to pick up during fast play.

Taping the top keeps it from slipping out of my hands. Taping the bottom helps the blade "give" when receiving a pass so that I don't immediately lose the puck.

so when the puck is passed to you it dosn't slip off your stick. the blade by itself is slippery and when you gte the pass the puck would slip right off your stick. there's a special tape for your blade called friction tape. it's sticky on both sides so the puck sticks easier. also because the constant hard passes, one-timers, and slap shots wear down the blade.

Also tape from the heel to the tip, not from the tip to the heal, adds grip.

It helps grip the puck better. Without it on, most sticks the puck would just slide off.
