1) there is no great place to purchase healthy fish other than straight from a breeder
2) fish you buy in ANY store have been mass raised, overbred and MASS shiiped and very few are disease free. there is only a small chance that they are healthy. the shipping alone is a MAJOR stress on them
3) a VERY LITTLE known fact is that the scanners at the register and the magnetic scensors at the doors are DEADLY to fish. (9 times out of 10 they plop your bag right on the scanner to put in the codes)
4) consider the outside air temp and the temp in your car while you transport them..
5) most of the fish in pet stores are already adult fish (most live bearers are) and hey...they don't have long life spans
6) then add all the other informative info you already know about and chances are pretty good that fish will just not make it to well.

I hope any of this information has been helpful

I agree! And I think the simple answer to having fish that survive and are happy and healthy is that we fully research every aspect of fishkeeping before ever buying the fish, because there is so much to know. Cycling water, testing water, water changes and proper cleaning techniques, proper filtration, what type of gravel makes the best substrate and how much to have, how to choose the proper plants for your tank, how to choose proper lighting, how to determine what size of tank to buy and how many fish you can buy depending on the size of the tank, familiarizing yourself with all the diseases and parasites and treatment of same. Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention!

The thing about the scanners and the magnetic sensors on the doors is a myth. This is not deadly to fish!!!

Not all fish that you get at a pet store are adulth, many are still juveniles. This is actually a huge problem because customers buy tiny little 1 inch clown loaches and oscars for their 10 gallon tank...not realizing that the fish will grow to be 12 inch tankbusters!

Most fish deaths are caused by poor water quality...50% water changes each week are ideal for any freshwater tank.

I'm not saying that pet stores don't carry unhealthy fish, we've all seen them. But before blaming the pet store for the death of your fish, please look at your tank and be sure that YOU have done everything you can to care for that fish properly.

The generalizations you make about purchasing tropical fish for the most part are unfounded aside from the fact that extreme temperature fluctuations are very detrimental to the well being of the fish and they should be protected properly.

Did you're taking each and every of the water out and positioned him in a separate field? become he in a bowl? The water would were the incorrect temperature once you position it in and it ought to have bowled over him. He would are transforming into lower than pressure once you took him out of the bowl/tank. Bettas dont fairly opt for to be in a bowl reason it truly is so small that they could get lower than pressure and die. you ought to get like a three gallon tank and positioned a Betta in it he will be a lot happier.

many public aquariums do marine water baths on freshwater fish for 30 minutes to kill all the bacteria and parasites that come on a fish. a marine water bath is roughly a tablespoon of aquarium salt per gallon. watch you fish and remove him if he looks overly stressed. this does not work for salt sensitive fish like cory catfish.

likewise they do freshwater baths for marine fish.
