to start your research=buy 2 vegatable plants same kind. buy 2 good size containers and add dirt to both and water. place one plant outside and one plant inside with a light about 4 feet away make sure the artiffical light is on all the time, also water each plant daily. You'll find out that the plant inside will grow more and get larger, because it lives by light and the one outside only has light when its daylight, there for the plant outside only grows during daylight.

RE: Do plants grow better in sunlight or in artificial light? Research: Sunlight is the where most plants and trees get energy from to make food in order to survive. We have come up with a new idea. We are wondering if the same plant will grow under an artificial light. This experiment will give us the answer. Material: 1.) 2 of the same plants 2.) A...

Each plant, you will find, has a specific light wave length in whichit will grow the best. As an example of this i will give African Violets that grow best in 24 hour Purple light . Fact is you can buy a set up to grow these commercially with purple light bulbs and tubes which I own.
I know that ordinary seeds from Hosta plants will not germinate under Natural Day light Bulbs, they will germinate readily under regular White Flourscent bulbs in 4 or 5 days. And they will grow much faster under that wavelength of light.
So Id pretty much say that Natural Daylight IS NOT an across the board answer for all plants highest growth factors. And to answer your last question, It is because the phyical and chemical processing of certain wavelengths of light to chlorophil and sugars is better in a specific given plant for a specific given wave length, IE, African violets process more Chlorophil and sugars in purple light!!!

Depends. Some plants have adapted to live in low light conditions and therefore die in direct sunlight. These plants will happily grow in artificial light (my peace lillies and ferns love the artificial lighting at the office). However plants pre-date artificial lighting and are designed to photosynthesise using UV which is something that would not be appreciated i an office environment and as such those plants would do much better in direct/filtered sunlight.

All plants grow best in sunlight but the next best thing is a yellow light. For top growth you would put it in the sun during the day and put a yellow light on it at night.
