As a teacher let me assure you that I hate spending my time in the evenings marking homework. It is a necessary evil for both of us - we must grin and bear it and just imagine the holidays when it won't stress us out anymore

Actually, Fifi, when you're older or in high school you might realize that homework is actually important in order to succeed. If a class period is 40 minutes long, that is not nearly enough time in a day if you really want to be on top of whatever topic you are studying. And certain things, like math and science (and English in the lower grades), must be practiced. If you learn something in algebra, chances are, you will understand it much clearer if you practice it at home. It may seem boring, and most of the time it is, but to really get ahead and to do well you must do your homework. Not for the teachers, not for the participation/homework grade, but for yourself.

Teachers are providing you with a great service, and for you to be sitting in that classroom is a privilege, and you should be thankful that there are people kind enough to provide that service for you. Teachers are paid very little at first, and only make more money with experience, and it still isn't very much. Believe me, they aren't paid enough for all they do!

Teachers are also trying to teach students responsibility. For the real world. In the real world, there are things you are going to need to do, and there are deadlines you are going to have to meet. Messing up in the real world causes a lot of problem -- much worse than a zero for a homework grade. Think of it as practice for when you are an adult and have actual responsibilities.

You're missing an important point about learning. Your teachers can stand in front of you all day and TRANSMIT information to you, but there has to be some proof that you have RECEIVED that information. So homework, is FEEDBACK from YOU that you are GETTING WHAT IS BEING TRANSMITTED !!! You're just sitting there otherwise. How can anyone know that you are grasping what's being taught? You can't sit there and, say, burp, your answer to the teacher. Is that communication with your mind, your intelligence? Thinking and writing is your intelligence in black and white! No one can read your mind, you have to write something down to prove that you are learning, understanding and receiving! Otherwise, one would have to guess if you are increasing your knowledge in what's being taught to you! And let me warn you, if you don't do your homework and then possibly start failing, the alternative is worse! You should enjoy using your mind and your intellect. Using your mind expands your intelligence. It gets better the more you use it, like anything else in your body. You don't exercise, in time, you'll be fat and sluggish. Why would you not want to keep developing your mind? Homework is like a BRAIN GYM! The more you have to navigate and twist and turn your mind to understand something, the stronger your mind becomes! Now why would you want to go through life with only a weak brain? What advantage would you have in life, with a weak brain? It would probably cause you to also have a lame, weak life! I'm sure you wouldn't want to end up like that! Develop your mind through doing homework! In whatever way you can become stronger in life, do it! It's survival of the fittest out there so build up as many personal strengths as you can find! No one is more important to you than YOU! Be your BEST to give yourself the chance to have the BEST LIFE! Ignoring yourself is no plan for a great future! It takes work and effort and you will be rewarded for those efforts one day! You may not see that now, but truly, what you do TODAY will affect your TOMORROW! So drop the tunnel vision and realize what you do is important to you and your life! Get busy!

I too hate homework, but i do it, because its important. Most of my classes, homework is 20% of my final grade.Truth is, im not such a hot test and quiz taker in Algrebra (all of subjects i am =]) so i depend on my Algebra teacher giving homework so i can do it and keep my grade up.

Homework is also, as the teachers say, a review from the lessons learned today.BUT, what i hate is my History teacher giving me 2 projects at the same time, and homework!

SO i agree and DISagree with you

I am a teacher and actually I have to agree, I think there is far too much homework given. Some teachers give homework when it's not even their day to give it totally not caring about all the other homework you have to do.

I know when it comes to exams there is a lot of swatting up to do and that can take most of your time, but I do wish everyone would lighten up on homework.

It's not the marking...I never mind that...it's just not fair that kids get home from school then have another couple of hours still ahead of them...wrong, wrong, wrong!

I am 36. I'm doing a qualification in adult education, so I can teach. I feel like you. Haven't been in school for 19 years. Only advice is move it and get it done. Its your brain the teachers are deining to improve, they are trying to help. the more you strain and try, the more the knowledge sinks in. Have you tried doing homework in groups, so you can chat about it? As you move through education unstructred work (homework) takes a greater part. You will be expected to explore ideas in the library/internet. Your teacher is helping you to develop, but feel free to ask questions. That's how you learn.

make sure that you have somewhere nice and relaxed for your home work.
trust me i had a pretty bad homelife and used to do homework at 'adult places' like internet cafes, library or even in the park ALONE!!i didnt do this often but looking back i did do my best in my corsework and essays etc!
why dont you put on your fav music on low to relax you.DONT invite mates round, its too much of a distraction and tell ur mom/dad/guardian that you need no distractions for that hour of the day.
now i am older i miss my school days including the homework!!!!
good luck x
also i agree with poster 'ok, so i really dont know', as this is she is right

I'm sorry that you hate homework, is their a certain reason WHY you hate homework. Usually you hate something for reason. Im a freshman in high school and I have learned that homework is a big deal. If you don't do it in middle school and you dont' study, your chances of getting good grades aren't as good as if you do your homework and you do study.

homework is taking up our lives, everything is based around homework. But if we didnt do our homework could you honestly swear you would remember all that junk the next day? Though it is better doing homework first to get the motivation of thinking what you can do after hw.

They don't pay teachers enough money to do it for u! Besides u need to practice yourself. Class time is not enough to cover everything. Know that the most successful students study more at home than at school! Something else: your future starts there...
