Pads are easier for first-timers, but tampons are okay too if you know how to use them. Go here to learn how to use a tampon:

For pads, you just peel off the back layer (like a sticker) and attach it to your underwear.
Also, don't leave tampons in overnight or for more than 4-6 hours.

You dad can handle this one. Talk to him and tell him you have started your period and need some supplies. He will take you to the store to get everything you need or he will know who to call to help you out. You will need to get a supply of either pads or tampons. You need to change these at least every 4 hours when you have your period. For the first year or so you may be very irregular but once you body settles down you will get usually every month. A lot of women get it every 28 days but some get it every 24 or even every 34 days. Some women never had really regular cycles so that is not unusual either. Good Luck.

That's tough! I understand that you don't want to talk to your dad. I didn't tell anyone when I got my period I was so embarrassed. I would go to the drugstore and get some pads. I wouldn't try tampons yet. Some regular maxi pads are good and if you would be more comfortable you can also get some overnight ones, they are longer and provide more protection when you are lying down to sleep.

Tylenol or ibuprofen works well for cramps if you have them. I would remember to drink lots of water during your period too. If you have more questions remember you can always talk to a girlfriend, or maybe one of their moms. There is also the school nurse you can go to if you feel comfortable.

Good luck!

Start out with some pads. They have a sticky strip on one side that you stick to the inside of your under wear. for the first year or so you might be irregular. that means that your period can come any time. Since you live with your dad and you might not feel comfortable then talk to an aunt, best friend or just any adult that you trust. if you get cramps try midol, Motrin or Tylenol. Hope you had enjoyed those days of being free!!!

Good luck!! and hope everything works out perfectly!!!

Do you have a friend or her mom that you can go to? What about any other family memebers? Basically just remember it's normal. You may need to tell your dad, you'll have to get pads/tampons. I would suggest starting with pads until you get familiar with your period. Using a tampon at first may be uncomfortable. Your period will most likely be irregular, but you'll be able to tell when it's coming. Take care of yourself. Walking or excercising sometimes helps, take pain reliever, use a heating pad, eat chocolate. try to find someone you can talk to in person, it will be better for you

Do you have an aunt or grandmother that you see on a regular basis? If not, just go to your school nurse. She will be able to tell you what to do. As far as shopping for what you need, get a list from the nurse and just ask your dad to take you to the store. If you don't feel comfortable, he can wait in the car.

I don't suggest asking your friends because you are only 13. If anything, as the mom of one of your friends.

I agree. Just go the store and buy some maxipads. I wouldn't use tampons yet until you get the hang of things. There are instructions on or in the box. Ask a girlfriend for moral support if you need it.

Sorry about your mom, and it's a pity your father couldn't give you a heads up on this, but men do get weird about this stuff.

And never wear white trousers during TOM. Trust me.

get some pads or some tampons from the store since you just started you might want to get some pads with a leak guard also some pads have what is called wings on them they go under the botttom part of your under wear this keeps the pad in place they make them without wings too also you should change your pad depending on your bloodflow of course. also ask one of your friends who has already had their period or an aunt cousin best friends mom grandma even your dad if you feel comfortable

aw :(
first, you're going to need some pads. i wouldnt use tampons yet, get used to using the pads first and change it every time you go to the bathroom, or every like 3 hours or something. pads are pretty easy to use, you just unwrap it and put it in your underwear so it fits comfortably.
and youre probably going to get some cramps in your tummy so take some tylenol, lay down, eat chocolate and put on a good movie :)
good luck!
