I have called people in the USVirgin Islands from my home phone and I just dial 1-340 and the number. I have never used a country code since they are part of our country. The 1 is for long distance calling.

You should be fine.

You just dial 1 then 340 then the rest seven digits of the number. Basically you just dial like if you were dialing out of state...NOT international. It is also free from your cell phone to dial the US Virgin Islands if you have Cingular, Sprint or Verizon. If you have TMobile then there are additional charges.

Its a U.S. possession. You call just like you would anywhere else in the U.S. 1+Area Code+number.
