I was the "baby" and I got away with murder. I think if they had been harder on me I would have been more successful in life. Like gotten a college degree or something like that.

I think that as parents raise more than one child, they get wore down and things that were major with the 1st child are minor with the 4th. You kinda learn to pick your battles, especially with teens.
Also some parents mellow out with age, they are less stressed, less financially strapped when they have the later children than they were with the older children.
Older Children often have to be " more reponsible" because they are the "OLDER" child, often take on a parental role with the younger siblings. Oldest Child Syndrome often leads to High Drive, intiative, and success. Birth Order does play a significant role in your personality and development. Middle children are more competative " MARSHA MARSHA MARSHA" aka Jan Brady Syndrome, they have to compete for the parents attention, get the hand me downs, don't have the completed baby book, Mom was just too busy, now there are two or three.. They are kind of thrown into being the "overlooked" child, so they have to work twice as hard and are twice as competative.
Last Children or the Baby Brat as we called her in our family,
Spoiled, Mom knows she is last one to leave the nest, The older Children are out by time she is a teen, and Mom buys her a Car, while child No. 1,2, 3 are going, Where the heck is my car?
Mom bails her out of jail and No.1 Son says, Wait a minute, you told me, if I got in the trouble you were going to leave me there all night! and YOU DID!!!! Don't worry when the Grandkids, come baby girl, you are on your own...!!! Time to go back to school...
All kids think it is gonna be a breeze when they are out on their own and then WHAM , the rent comes due?

My parents were definitely too hard. My mom was complete wild child while she was growing up, so she controlled every aspect of my life trying to keep me from doing the same things she did. BACKFIRE! Once I got to college, I let loose. I did get it all out of my system within 2 years, but I will NOT repeat the same process with my children - But I won't let them just run wild either. There is a definite healthy balance that needs to be kept.

My parents were two people who never should have gotten together, let alone raise five children together. They could not wait to get apart, and I think that in the process, we all missed out on a lot of things. None of us went to college, or got great careers. We're all struggling. So, yeah, they should have been harder on all of us.

I was the youngest of 4 and I know I lived in Shangri La. As a matter of fact I get criticized that the childhood I grew up in was not the real world. It's probably true but still I appreciated it. My feeling is the rest of the world is harsh and it was the job of my parents to teach me about it but also protect me from it until I learned to go it on my own.
I guess that's why I do the same for my son now. The world is full of bastards that my child is going to have to deal with. I'm not going to be one of them. I'm going to be there when he needs me. Just the way my parents were there for me.
And yes my parents paid for a lot (not all) of my college.

How can you get away with murder?

I was the baby too and I got my university degree, my career, etc. Was the problem your parents or a lack of personal motivation?
My parents were (and still are) great.

My parents were great. They did the very best that they could. I was the one that wasn't hard enough on myself. All I wanted to do was be with my friends and party, party, party. Hind site is always 20/20. Don't blame your parents. By the way, it's never too late...go out and get your degree now.

My parents weren't very hard on me at all. I've never ever been grounded or punished for something I've done. I never had a bedtime. But then again... I was a pretty good kid so. But sometimes I wonder what I'd be like now if they were more like other parents. Although I like not having a curfew or bedtime!

No, sometimes they can be too hard. I was the baby and my dad was almost to the point of being evil and it didn't help me (no, I wasn't bad--my stepmom even says that).I think that I was too hard on my daughter and she is an overachiever and too lenient on my son and he's an underachiever. There's a balance there but I never quite figured it out.

At the time I thought it was too hard, but...most of the punishments I got, I caused myself. I can't blame them for wanting to teach me right from wrong and having some consequences for my actions reinforced that. I tried to use the same "system" with my kids, but the wife fought me every step of the way. Funny thing is, one of my sons thanked me for trying to do what I did. That lets me know that I wasn't a bad parent.

I think kids should stop blaming their parents for the decisions they make in adulthood. If you want a degree use the energy wasting blaming your parents and go for it!
