When you connect to the internet via dialup, you are likely hearing the speaker from the modem, unless it really is coming from the speakers (put your ear next to them to see).

It sounds like your regular speakers aren't connected; without knowing what you have I would suggest the following:

- Make sure they are plugged into the SPEAKER jack (if this is a desktop).
- Make sure they have POWER. Many have separate power.
- Make sure the VOLUME dial is up on the speaker itself.
- Make sure the VOLUME is up on the COMPUTER. You might have a volume control in the lower right corner of your desktop, or you will need to go to and click on "Sounds and Audio Devices" or something similar, make sure the VOLUME is up somewhat and it is NOT muted.

If none of that works, you'll need to post additional details.

Also, some programs that play music have their own separate volume controls and muting, so make sure those are up and not muted too.

Dialup uses modem. A modem sends and receives signals to and from your ISP. The noises are a handshake. Your ISP's modem and your modem have to find out if they can communicate with one another. After is is decided they can (through this "handshake") then you can connect to the Internet. Go to Start | Find the My Computer icon in your start menu. Right click on it and select Properties. Select Hardware tab and press the Device Manager button. Scoll down and find the Modem in the list of devices. Double-click the modem and a properties screen will pop up. There should be an option to disable the sound for connecting.

You get sound on the web but not when you play music? Is the volume turned down or muted on the media player you are using?
