Originally, valentine's day had nothing to do w/ buying gifts for your wife or girlfriend. (I never expect anything for valentine's day, I always tell my boyfriend not to waste his time and money. I just don't believe in gifts stuff, it's all about business anyway).
Here's the real story about Valentine:
Saint Valentine is said to have lived in Rome during the third century. That was a long time ago. During this time Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. Many people did not like the ruler.
Claudius was having trouble getting men to serve in his army. He felt many men would not volunteer to join because they did not want to leave their wives and families. He thought that if men were not married, they would join the army. So Claudius passed a new law which did not allow any more marriages. Most people thought this law was cruel. Valentine, who was a minister, did not support the new law.
Even after Emperor Claudius passed the law, he kept performing marriage ceremonies secretly. One night he was caught and thrown in jail and told he would be put to death.
Many young people came to visit Valentine. One was the daughter of the prison guard. On the day of his death Valentine wrote a note to the daughter signed "Love from your Valentine". This was on February 14, 269 A. D.
Some say this started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day.

I agree with it being a commercial holiday. My husband and I aren't even doing anything special. In fact, this will be the first Wednesday in a few weeks that we will not even be together. (Wednesday is his one full day off. We find it's easier to do things during the week when things are less busy.) I don't get the thing about buying the cheesy gifts and the expectiations, etc. I don't need the great retail companies of America telling me when I "should" celebrate my love with my husband and with what. We have our personal days for that-- The day we started dating, his birthday, my birthday, our wedding anniversary, and soon, the birth of our child. Nothing pink, nothing red, no cliched presents. Just us. Just personal.
Although, I might go the the drugstores and groceries and get some of the markdown chocolate.

Invented by the greeting card companies as a way to sell more cards, it has morphed into what we preface the lesser known, "Steak and B-job Day." It is a ritualistic and obligatory relationship holiday that is matriarchaly beneficial. Uncreative, or clueless oaf's buy red roses and take their mate to an expensive dinner. More creative and possibly smarter or cheaper men opt for cooking a nice dinner and serving wine.
