Land Rover is the Brand.
Range Rover is the make of the Land Rover
All Land Rover brands (ie LR3, Range Rover, Range Rover Sports, Freelander, LR2 *not out til late Spring 07, Discos -Defender *made for UK) -ALL MAKES -are off roading vehicles. That's what they are built for. They were never really considered "luxury vehicles" until recently.

I've off roaded in a Range Rover 07 - amazing vehicle.
Good luck.

Both the Land Rover Discovery / LR3 and Range Rover are made by the same company, Land Rover. The LR3 is intended as a true off-road vehicle and is marketed as such.

The Range Rover is intended to be more of a creature-comfort luxury SUV and marketed to the wealthy suburbanite crowd. Range Rovers have more interior appointments and less cargo space than the LR3's do.

The LR3 is the better choice as an off-road vehicle. Land Rover has always had a reputation for making competent *real* SUV's, even if their air suspension systems are rather weak.
"Consumer Reports" and "Road & Track" both confirmed it.

It used to be that the Discovery and Range Rover shared the same engine and self-adjusting air suspension system; I don't know how it is with the LR3 and Range Rover Sport, because they're still in warranty.
