Not pointless to the Chocolate Candy Makers or Hallmark Cards!! And they all make men feel guilty if they don't take the time and the money to prove their undying love to the women they love, and it's usually a workday!!! Oh, enough sympathy but it does make me feel bad and I make sure my husband and I buy candy and (cheaper) flowers before that dreadful day!! Hey!! The day after is perfect for buying good chocolates inside big Heart-shaped Boxes at Half-Price!! GAWD, I hate red roses!! Oh, uh, an answer is required!! They have it BECAUSE "THEY" CAN!!
Money Honey!! Money again!! Emotional Blackmail!! @8-)

Not completely pointless.
Some people describe it as a Hallmark holiday. I haven't had a Valentine since the 4th grade, and it was my brother. Valentine's Day, simply put, is a day to celebrate the love we have for a person/people. I wish love would be celebrated as much everyday as it is on Valentine's day. I know how you feel, sometimes a little insecure and jealous because you don't have anyone to be with or you think it's a tad cheesy. But, it's the single day in the year we take the time to celebrate an amazing thing called love.
I haven't fallen in love yet. I don't know what it's like. But I'm sure the feeling it gives you is unlike anything else in the world. If we commemorate the day spirits come down and try to take over our bodies (Halloween), then why not love?
A good friend of mines was born on Valentine's Day. I've hated it before, but spending time with my friend helped me figure out that it's not about having a lover, but about spending time with the ones you love. For me, Valentine's Day is usually goofing off with him and the rest of my friends, who I do love dearly.
I hope you don't see that negatively on Valentine's day now. I also hope you have a wonderful one.

We have it because not everyone hates Valentine's Day. If we didn't have holidays because someone didn't like them we wouldn't have any at all. Holidays are meant to celebrate something. Christmas is a holiday about family and giving (or about the birth of Jesus Christ if you're Christian). Thanksgiving is celebrating all the things we have to be thankful for. V-Day is just another celebration but it's a celebration about the love we feel for that special other.
Unfortunately every single holiday has been capitalized and the essence of the celebration has been tainted, which kind of makes it less special. However, it is possible to get past that and embrace what we're trying to celebrate. For some people it's also hard to feel a use for Valentine's day when they don't have a Valentine to celebrate with because the means that the holiday doesn't really apply to them, at least not this year.

Because the florist, the candy people, the card people, and the jewelry people all got together and invented it to make men buy their products.

It's just another holiday to be exploited by its creator, corporate america. It's all we really need, just another damn holiday to go out and waste money on.
