yuo can look this up on the internet, but yes its so big ..
One principle is that the chances for living longer for the individual that is better adapted to its environment is greater than the individual that is less adapted to its environment.
so for instance I probably live l;onger than you since I know how to use th internet for solving my problems. that will give me an advantage when i am for instance in the desert and only have wireless internet, I can find water by googling , you cant
on the other hand if there is no internet , my ability to find answers on internet is useless , and we have to look at other abilities that are usefull in this harsh environment, then you may have an advantage since you just ask the answer at someone else, while I dont or only after a long long time
ah well and then its assumed that these abilities are somwhere coded in m=our genes so that the next generation also have these abilities.

Small variations in phenotype (details of the body) (which we now know are due to genetic coding) permit a species to adapt to changes in environment due to change of locale or climate. The portion of the species that survives the best will be the one in which the variations most increase the chances of survival (a better beak for harder seeds) or reduce the chances of death (changed hair coloring that matches changes in ground cover.)

Species have the ability to generate more offspring than their environment can support.
Organisms vary in their characteristics and some are more successful in survival and reproduction.
Those best adapted to survive and reproduce will pass their traits on and will be disproportionately represented in future generations.
