We did book talks in high school, which were very in depth book reports, where we discussed all aspects of a novel, including theme, symbolism, etc etc. A few I did were:
Wuthering Heights
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Candide
The Color Purple.
Candide is pretty short, and it has lots of stuff for you to talk about. Also, you can never go wrong with books like 1984, Catcher in the Rye, Brave New World, etc. If you're up for a bit of a lobger read, try Crime and Punishment. Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility would be good as well. Good luck!

What was I reading in the 10th grade? Hmmm... I read Ishmael by Daniel Quinn, a book that changed my life. You could try that one, its almost a quick read, but with lots of information which makes it a good challenge, and the plot is gripping.
If you want something a little more challenging that Ishmael was, try The Story of B, also by Daniel Quinn. Less challenging, My Ishmael, also by Daniel Quinn.

I'm going to say Zodiac by Robert Graysmith. It's a excellent book. Or go with Flags of our fathers by James Bradley. also a great book just started reading it and cant put it down. Hopes that helps. Or for ideas. go with titles from here and find out on amazon how good they are. read peoples remarks and decide if that would be something you would read.

Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird is excellent, but it may already be on your "required" reading list.
Try The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson if you would like a psychological ghost story that's very well-written.

I am the Messenger by Marcus Zuzak was a very good book. It is a bit of humor, a bit of social commentary and a little fantastic (but I wouldn't call it a fantasy at all). You might want to try that one.
