You sound like a highly motivated student, so I'll give a little bit of advice that I found in tutoring SAT's for 15 years and having 31 students who achieved perfect scores. You don't need to take a Latin course BUT, you can study, on your own and memorize as many Latin + GREEK prefixes, suffixes and roots as you can. These will give you the life-long decoding tools you will need when you encounter words you don't know. Learning Latin grammar does not necessarily give you any additional advantage. Furthermore, keep in mind that almost all science vocabulary is Latin/Greek based and all the romance languages. If you concentrate on the above, you will have more than a sufficient advantage. Many people call Latin a dead language, and they are partially right in that nobody speaks it as communication, however, it is present in so much literature, vocabulary, history, sciences and art that dismissing it's (and Greek) prefixes, roots and suffixes is a real disservice to higher education. Good luck in your future.

Latin will make a difference in your ability to understand English grammar and etymologies of very many English words, both of which impact your facility with language and therefore make a difference on your SATs. Having said that, I would not take Latin in order to "boost your scores." Rather you should take an SAT preparation class if that is all you want to do. There will be a higher return on time investment. But to prepare you for a career (or even a starting path) in academics I could scarce recommend anything more highly than Latin.

It's spelled Virgil--not Vergil. The reading comprehension for SAT Latin should prove to be no more difficult than the 2nd Year in highschool.

It's supposed to help because you learn the prefixes of words and that would help you understand the word's meaning, but Latin is called the dead language for a reason.

i took Latin, it is supposed to help you with the meaning of words and stuff, but I really think it is a waste of time! you should get a fun class, because when you get all hard classes everything gets accumulated....believe me it happened to me, used to have all my classes Hon and it is just overwhelming and boring. Try something like Ceramics!
