He was absorbed into the matrix but not reconnected. His purpose in life was to bring peace between humans & machines. He resides in the matrix not as a programme and not as a human but more of an entity or spirit. Did you notice in the final scenes of his death, his body was illuminated like a cross. Just a coincidence? I dont think so.

he's useless. yet obviously as he's not an similar as anybody else as he has supernatural powers. That and a frequently untidy ending leaves the writers an commencing for a sequel.

he dies. the way i understood it, agent smith was the anti-neo. mathematically, the matrix had to balance the anomally. neo and smith had to destroy each other for the matrix to sustain equilibrium.
