if i turn the power off and turn it on again it boots up ok

Go to Start, Run then type in CMD, hit okay then enter: chkdsk /r then hit enter. You will be prompted to enter Y for yes...do so then restart your pc. This will run a check on your pc's hard drive and make any needed repairs. If the problem persists, you could have a motherboard or hard drive that is failing.

Sorry, but you need to provide more information; for example, what sort of computer do you own (if it's a laptop you could have a battery problem) and what were you doing with it just before it went wrong.
