I am not sure if I want to use a dremel tool, or hand tools. Do you have a reccommendation? Is there a book that offers step by step plans for dremel projects? Can I do everything with the basic dremel kit, or do I need to buy more?

My husband carved pictures with hand tools for a long time. They came out really nice. Then he got himself a dremel tool and started using it. He said that it is so much easier to handle. I even carved a few pictures on the wood myself and was able to control it. You should get what is called a flex shaft to put on the end of the tool so the heavy part can be hung on a rod of some sort, and use the shaft like a pencil. What you can do to is get yourself a slab of wood, draw or trace a picture on it then use the tool to carve. It will take a little time to control the carving and following the patterns, but with practice it will become easy. Good luck and have fun.

I have used both a dremel and chisels. I prefer working with the dremel. It is a lot easier to handle, and you can get more definition in tight places with it. I was looking at dremel sets at Lowe's about a month ago and the sets have really changed. They have pretty large sets for less now.
I have seen books of wood carving projects. Another thing to look at is books for wood burning. They usually have a lot of patterns in those you could probably transfer over to carving.

I have done woodcarving with a dremel. Make sure it a model with good speed. Make sure you use wood cutting bits. Not sanding bits.

Never had the patience to use hand tools and most sold are really just fancy junk.
