Different settlers were dominant in different areas and the accents stuck. For example north was occupied by Celts for ages who had a different accent to those in the south. So they stick and melt into different accents as they cross the country

You might as well just ask why do people have different accents??
It's only in this last century that travel has become widely available and accents are now more noticable but originally people settled in one area and how they talked and the words they used were passed down to the next generation.

hmmm i dont know..maybe its the same reason why people from different parts of america, australia, poland, germany, ireland..and every other ******* country in the world have different accents....
