For better traction on poor road conditions. It puts more power on the road. Trucks are rear wheel drive, in 4WD mode the front axle is also given power. Sometimes it is used for better traction when pulling too, but again used in less then optimum road conditions, mud, snow, ice, etc.

I will start with my own experience. I own a 4x4 Ford F350 Truck. I have 40 acres of unimproved land that is seven miles off the main road. The only access I have is an unimproved trail that crosses several creek bottoms and sandy dry washes. I can drive there in a 2wheel drive, but if I ever got stuck I would be in trouble, since there is no one within four miles. I use my 4x4 to ensure that I will not get stuck going in and out.
Other uses for a 4x4 truck are collecting firewood in remote areas, and construction workers use them to get to muddy building sites.

What's better than two wheels pushing you through deep mud? Four wheels pushing you through deep mud. More traction becuase it disperses the power and weight of the truck amongst four wheels rather that two.
