I recently installed the Razer Barracuda AC-1 and am using the HP-1 surround sound headphones. Every once in awhile, when playing a game, there will be pops and cracks, sometimes a very loud buzz.

I believe I've completely removed all my previous soundcard drivers and software (using Driver Cleaner Pro) and tried both versions of Razer drivers.

It could be a set-up issue as I have little (or no) experience with surround sound. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I'm positive it's not the headphones, as the same pops, crackles, and buzzes occur with external speakers.

It doesn't happen in all games, So far it's happened in Oblivion, Flatout 2, and Republic Commando. I'm still tweaking some things here and there, as well as running on a clean boot to see if anything's fixed.

Sounds to me like the connection to your sound card is not very secure. I would try to insure that the headphone and speaker jack is securely into its connector, and if if you are using the add on connector/dongle, make sure it is secure on the back of the sound card. Also make sure the sound card is secure in its slot.

It could be a short in the sound card hardware if both the speaker and headphone exibit the same problem. You don't mention if it happens in ALL games or not. Could be a software conflict with certain games if it only happesn with one or two. Otherwise, I'd think you got yourself a short or loose connection.

How high pitched is the whine? If it sounds close to the "ringing" sound you get in your ear, like after hearing a really loud noise... Then that is a power supply that is failing. It will be a soft sound, but really high pitched whine...and just loud enough to be annoying. If that is the sound you are hearing, I would suggest you unplug the computer and do not use it again until you have replaced the power supply with a Corsair branded unit. If the power supply is failing, it can destroy any and all connected components when it does die. That's why I'm telling you to leave it unplugged until you replace the power supply. I doubt if what you are hearing is a cooling fan. A modern power supply will spin up the cooling fan when the PC hits a certain load level. But even at worst, power supply fans usually only run about 2000RPM. So the noise they make would not be described as high pitched. If you had an electronics issue with the graphics card that was bad enough to cause a high pitched whine....you would likely have other symptoms related to the graphics card. Like video artifacts, loss of video, computer freezing... If you have not noticed any problem in games other than high pitched whine, then the odds are pretty good you've got a failing power supply.

I agree with the first dude. Try using a different set of headphones and see if the problem goes away. If it does, throw away your old ones. If not, check sound card. Replace it. That should solve the issue. If you still have problems, come back with more info plz!

Personally it sounds like you have damaged your headphones / speakers with loud music / audio.
Damaged speakers etc will "Pop" as sound travels and vibrates the damaged plates.

The Surround Sounds set up regardless should have no effect on the sounds - however your sound card may not support 5.1 effectively.
