Well, that would require an awful lot of DNA manipulation. And if so, what would be their motive for doing so? Where are they now, and why did they leave no indication of their presence, activities, or plans behind?

I'd say it raises far more questions than it answers. As another answerer mentioned - Occam's Razor would seem to eliminate it from consideration. The chances that aliens manipulated ape DNA to develop humans is as likely as Godzilla-sized gerbils taking over the world. Which would be cool, I'll grant you - but not likely.

When I was younger, I read this silly, but rather fascinating book: Erich von Daniken's Chariots if the Gods. Imagine my surprise when some of his theories showed up in Stargate SG-1! The Ancients, according to the show, colonized and manipulated creatures across the galaxy. While I don't necessarily buy into the basic concept, there is a certain plausibility. And you aren't the first to ask the question. Have fun researching the numerous theories.

Anything is possible, but extra-ordinary claims require extra-ordinary proof. I've heard that cosmic rays can mutate chromosomes at the time of inception...so how does that grab you?

Sure is an interesting idea, isn't it? Woah.
Occam's Razor requires that I reject the hypothesis for now, though.
