Irreverent?....true.
Freaking hilarious?.....true!
Slander?.....don't think so.
I believe that everybody and every organization or group needs to have a healthy sense of humour about themselves.
If you can't laugh at yourself, then you're taking things far too seriously. If you can't stand up to a little bit of ha ha then you don't really have solid faith or basis for a belief system then do you?
Satire can go too far though and really become harrassment or disrespectful, or worse - hatred. The Monty Python troupe (in my mind) never pushed the satire of any group (religious or otherwise) to the point where it crossed the line.
When The Life of Brian came out, while other religious groups were protesting it and trying to get it banned, my church's group of elders all made a night of it to see the movie and thought it was pretty hilarious.
Always look on the bright side of life, right?

Comedy Genius
From the Spanish Inquisition sketches to Life of Brian itself, its always a reminder to not take things seriously. Otherwise why would God allow us to the gift of laughter.
