I have a Dell laptop and a Western Digital external drive. The combination has worked well for me, at least.

Any Maxtor External.
If you want something Robust, try a LACIE. Not that Maxtor is not robust, just that Lacie tends to survive all sorts of Travels very well, at least in my experience
