I would suggest Nat Turner. He was a slave who led a rebellion in Southwest Virginia and effectively scared all the white slaveowners in the area. This actually proved to be very bad for the slaves, though, because the whites treated them more harshly after Turner's Rebellion. However, it is seen as a watershed event in antebellum history... leading to the Civil War.

I would recommend Scot French's book "The Rebellious Slave" as a fantastic place to start. French talks about the legacy of Turner and how his actions effect African Americans all the way up until the present.
