America is not what a lot of people say it is. I know alot of people say that we are stupid. Alot of people are stupid, but there are stupid people in every country and there certainly are tons of smart people. I dont understand how other countries say we only speak one language and are not open to others, because first of all in school your suppose to take a foreign language. There are some fat people but once again there are some fat people in almost every country and its the same thing with all that loud business. Most of America is not rich. Most are average, and there are lots of poor too. Yes, there are some arrogant people but there are arrogant people in other countries too. Most people are either extremely nice or average. If other countries don't like our government/president then Thats no reason to hate all of America.
I love America and and it shouldn't be stereotyped so much.
Does this change any ones opinion at all?

Well I guess not as many people hate the U.S. as I though. I looked up the question before and saw very hateful comments, and I kinda guessed that the majority of people hate U.S.
Thanks for your answers.

i have met a few americans in my time, and i have found them just the same as anyone else i've met, but one of the reasons there is this perception that everyone hates america is the fact that america sends this message out to the world. theres a debate on here tonight about whether they should be allowed guns, the responses to that from americans is stereotypical. then theres other smaller incidences, like the huge porn industry they have yet scream blue murder cos they saw part of janet jacksons boob for a millisecond. theres also the perception that americas answer to a problem is to throw money at it, everyone has their price.

a.) You're right, there are a lot of smart people and a lot of stupid people. The difference is that the stupid people in America are self-righteous, arrogant and refuse to acknowledge the fact that they're under-educated. They tend to take control of important things, like the government.
b.) Schools are required to teach a foreign language but how many high schoolers do you know who are bilingual unless they grew up in a bilingual home? The Japanese pour TONS of money into teaching their children English and most elementary school children can speak it conversationally, at least. The language classes I had in high school paled in comparison.
c.) American is the leading country for obesity, so much so that it has been classified as an "epidemic." We are an exceedingly indulgent and lazy country.
d.) I think our government is a good reason to hate America because attitude that our government takes IS arrogant and it reflects on the rest of the country. We have Westernized tons of other countries - and I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing - but we refuse to believe that we're possible of being in the wrong.
I look at some of the questions and answers just on Yahoo answers and I thank myself every day that I am enrolled in such a good college and that I have had the opportunity to get an education. I wish that more people would take advantage of the education system in America. There is much to love and hate about this country. If you think everything is A-Okay in this country then you aren't opening your eyes.

The problem is that a lot of people only get their information based on what they see on TV. And we all know how slanted the media can be. A lot of Americans have bad opinions of other countries for the same exact reasons. Nobody should be stereotyped, because nobody actually fits all the labels put on them.

I totally agree with you dearie. I've felt that way for years.

I'm sure you are a nice American and what you say is true regarding people. But rightly or wrongly people see Americans as America and America is very unpopular at the moment, therefore sadly you become part of that unpopularity.
The death toll of the British soldiers, Iraq, Iran, the environment, and loads more is why you are unpopular.
Britain has it too. I have the same attitude towards me. Half of my family are from India and where they are from they hate the British. Rightly or wrongly but that's them and I do get a tongue lashing every now and again for something that some Victorian person did all those years ago.

Indeed your argument is very sound, however, unfortunately the media is so saturated with American culture that the rest of the world has this stereotypical image of Americans. The reason most people do not like your president is that they are afraid that he will cause yet another war. Your news coverage is very biased and insular. You have very little idea what goes on in the world but not everyone hates Americans just because of where they are from.

Doesn't change my opinions - I've always liked America and Americans (I'm from the UK).

America has more university gradualtes per head of population than any other country in the world (Scotland is 2nd).

It is however the most obese country in the world but here in the UK we're catching up fast.

The point you make is a good one - there are people of all types in all countries. It's a very narrow minded person that judges an entire nation on the basis of one or two people.

I am canadian, and while there are many americans I like and believe are out to improve the world, the vast majority we see on tv or meet are arrogant and ignorant, think that their country is better than anyone else's and agree with the policies and wars and occupations that trouble us so much, right down to the cars they drive and the way they treat people. It's true, some are good people, but compared to other countries, there are far more bad and scary people with too much power and the belief that they have the right to wield it in the states.

edit - trvor - your info on university grads is way off! did you just come up with that?

I'm ENGLISH and find nothing wrong with Americans, certainly they are a friendly nation as a whole and i would rather trust America than some others who wish to divide us.

You are right in all you say. I'm English, and I love America and it's people. The people who hate America, are totally ignorant. You haven't changed my opinion of America, as I think it's the greatest. There is a country song by Merle Haggard called 'the fighting side of me'. about how he loves America.
