My favorite novel may be Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins. I say "may" because, honestly, it's virtually impossible for me to choose one book over all others, and my answer will probably change with my mood (or memory!). In any event, Jitterbug Perfume will always be on my "short list" of best fiction, whatever my mood, as will The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay, by Michael Chabon.
Also, Mists of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card.
As for a short list for non-fiction...I guess it includes Beautiful Mind and Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl, to name two.
