I have a hard time sitting down to pay my bills. It's probably because I just don't have a lot of money right now so i put it off as long as I can. But then I end up getting late fees. It's like I get a mental block. Does anyone else go through this? How do I get myself to be more efficient and disciplined?

It takes a lot of self discipline, but it can be done. Don' go out spending money that really isn't there. Set yourself a goal, pay your bills. It is better to pay the on time. The money you save, you could treat yourself to something every now and then, or you could do the wise thing, save it.

Most rich people didn't get rich over night, the saved their change, dollars, and it added up.

The hardest thing is letting go of your hard earned money. But if you wait until the last possible minute to pay your bills you will get the late fees and that just takes more money out of your pocket. My advice would be to get a calendar or use your cell phone for reminders to pay. set an alarm for the day before so you can get the money together, write a check or however you pay. Then set an alarm on the day you need to mail/deliver the payment. It would also help if you get paid every two weeks to use your first paycheck of the month for the bills that are due at the end and then your last paycheck to pay the bills at the beginning of the month that way you always have it and you won't have to live paycheck to paycheck. I hope that made sense and helps!

It is a known characteristic of the human condition to put-off unpleasant responsibilities for as long as possible however this usually winds up hurting us.

Suggestions. Review your bills and write on the outside of the envelope what the due date is, how much should you pay and how much you paid last. Put all the bills in due date order with the earliest date on top. Put a rubber band around the bundle and as a constant reminder put the bundle some place where you can see it during the day. For an extra efficiency bonus write down a one week earlier due date as a cushion.

I have had the same issues as you do.

One thing that helped me a lot is online banking. If your bank provides this service, it is more than worth the small service charge.

Mine also provides bill payment services. I schedule payments for my recurring bills on a monthly basis and they are paid ON TIME automatically every month.

If you can pay more than the minimum due, but if not pay AT LEAST the minimum to avoid late fees which can add up.

If you are having financial difficulties, then you might research some credit counseling and/or payment services. You might be able to consolidate all your charges into one manageable payment each month.
Be careful and take care to research thoroughly, though, as this step may affect your credit score.

I would consider having them taken straight out of you bank account. At least the most important ones, like heat, water, and rent. Then set a scheduled time every month where no matter what it is bill paying time. I have two times a month when I do it. That way it doesn't feel like all this money is going out at once.
Good luck.

I do the same thing.

I set my bills up on automatic payment through my bank's Bill Pay.

For my credit cards, I pay the minimum payment (and then pay them in their entirety when I remember).

For my utilities, I pay the average amount...they don't change very often.

I make a lot of money. It's pretty bad when I have to turn the stove on to make sure my gas isn't cut off!

I had this problem when all my bills were due at the same time. I took only about an hour out of my day one time to contact some of the companys and have my bills due through them on a different date. This allowed me when I got paid to pay half of the bills due with one paycheck, then the other half when I got paid the next time. (Ie. getting paid bi weekly) What it came down to was my car payment, gas, electric, phone and water come out of my first check of the month; then my house payment, cable and internet service come out of my second.

Companys don't have any problem changing your due date if it helps you make your payments on time.

Well if you are getting late fees, you are spending more money, so it isn't 'paying' to procrastinate. What I tend to do is do the most unpleasant tasks FIRST and then they are done and overwith and I have other more happy things to do. The worry is gone, because it is done. Basically, pardon the phrase but you are cutting off your nose despite your face. Good luck
