The size of the vehicle won't help you that much. Heavier vehicles will grip the road better, but they are also harder to stop. The benefit to those larger vehicles is they have 4WD or all wheel drive. One of the best things you can do is have good tires.

4WD will help your vehicle grip the road better, but it's no help on ice nor will it help you stop faster. It doesn't make you smarter either. I see drivers do things in 4WD that they wouldn't think of doing otherwise - just plain stupid things.
I prefer a safe car with 4WD over a larger vehicle. I'd also lobby for safer drivers on winter roads. I can't believe how many drivers tailgate me on slick roads - by "tailgate" I mean they are too close to avoid a collision if my vehicle should spin out in front of them - or just drive too fast for conditions.

The more important thing is tires and the driver. Smooth summer tires will do you no good in snow/ice regardless of how big or heavy the vehicle is. Also 4x4 with poor tires just means you're spinning four wheels instead of 2.

I would say the 4wd would be best. Personal driving habits may be the biggest factor in determining the best performance in weather.
