The Honda is a better bike. Harley owners usually weigh 300 pounds and wear black leather vests with patches all over them. You will see many fat men fitting this description at Daytona bike week. Buy quality - buy the Honda.....

Sounds like a vicious rumor to me. Unfortunately, it's a rumor that might be based on fact! An article (see below link) says that there IS speculation that Honda will buy Harley-Davidson. But even the analysts say it would probably alienate the buyers, not to mention the FTC. Not a good idea, Honda...

I personally love my Road King, but I have a Yamaha Road Star as well and it has fewer if any problems compared to my Harley.

The Valkyrie will run rings around the Harley in speed and lower repair cost, but owning a Harley or Indian is all about status. Depending on where you live and ride, more and more bike rallies and bars are exceptant to metric bikes. Actually, when you throw a Victory in the face of a Harley owner many of them tend to stand down, because it too is an equal/better product especially in the maintnance department.

Leaving the Valkyrie out of it, there are any number of crusiers from various manufacturers that are less expensive, lighter, more powerful, better handling, etc. than Harley's big twins.

But why a Harley? For one thing, they hold their value. You can sell a used Harley for a much higher percentage of the original price than any other brand. Sure, they might not go as fast or handle as well but we're talking about cruisers - going fast is not what you buy a cruiser for.

For another thing Harleys marketing is incredibly effective. People have the HD logo tattooed on their bodies! For whatever reason the motor company gets an unbelievable amount of loyalty from their customers. For these customers that v-twin "potato potato" noise is the only thing that matters. They don't care about the price, they want that name on the tank and the recognition that comes with it.

Not mentioning all of the statements I see above listed about the real value of a Harley, I must mention one additional one that goes with your postulate. I have owned many a Harley over the years and every single one of them was sold for more than I originally gave for them, even the new ones. If you are talking true cost, you must include the depreciation for the Honda and the appreciation of the harley.

Practically speaking, it's a no brainer. There is not a Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki or BMW that is not a better motorcycle or value than a similar Harley. Emotionally, there is nothing like a Harley. NOTHING! The sound, ride and prestige of those bikes are unparalleled. I own a Suzuki VL 1500. It looks just like the Fat-Boy I owned. It's not the same bike though. I don't eat up regulators or batteries. I don't have parts vibrating off of it as I travel down the road. I don't hear or feel exactly the same thing either. In a fit of anger(my passenger peg vibrated off during a long ride and hit the guy behind me, requiring four stitches in his knee) I sold my Fat-Boy. I no longer have problems, but the ride just isn't the same. You have to experience owning a Harley to understand. It's a REAL culture. I miss it a little bit, but I don't miss being the only Harley in my group and having all of the cat-calls because of the problems with my bike.

First off, the Valk is a flat 6, not an inline.
Second, you can't buy a new Valkyrie (Rune excepted, which is certainly NOT less than half the cost) anymore.

So the answer is because Honda DOESN'T have the Valkyrie anymore for less than half the cost (which I doubt it ever was to begin with)!

it all about what some one prefers personally. but some buy into the culture alone. and as for the vf29 sandmans quote-
"there's alotta imitators and duplicators....but no originators quite like harley, and as far as i'm concerned after riding more than just a harley.....nothing rides like a harley. keep yer rice, i prefer my sporty. " i guess he has never heard of Indian, the first american motorcycle. harley pretty much copied everything they ever did. so in that case a guess a harley is just a Indian imitator. and now the honda's, suzuki's, kawi's etc are just copies of a copy.

Oh God here we go again! Harley owners, fans, vs. the rest of the motorcycling community. Why not just buy what you feel comfortable with and enjoy the ride?

its up to the person that rides. some just dont want jap between their legs. and that honda is going to have more weight than the road king from engine alone and most like is going to burn more gas from feeding more cylinders. i dont care much about getting from point a to point b at high speed, i just care about getting there in one piece. btw, i've seen the valkyrie...and it looks more like a mack truck than a bike. i personally think it's hideous. i'll pass on the rice.
