An Idea is a very hard sell. It is not tangible and therefore very hard to own. Even harder to convince others to accept it. If you have a thought that has never been thought before forget about protecting it. Share it with the rest of humanity . Please.

You cant protect an idea.

If its an idea for a project, then you need specific design plans an a description of the plan. Take a look at the patent office's patents to get an idea of what Im talking about.
you need the product in that form.

If its an idea for say a movie or something like that.
Well than you need to have either a treatment, or a first draft to copyright, and then any thing that resembles that is protected.
But only specifics would be.

Say your idea is a story about a flying elephant
well that could mean so many things. Dumbo, dumbo drop the movie.

So if its about a flying elephant thats magically turned into a mouse, and travels forth into the amazon to find his brother the monkey.

see my distinction.

Then theres theories, observations and what not.
New mathematical theories, or medical insights, well those you just seek to publish.

So....get specific, then maybe you can protect it!
Hope it helps

Depends on what your idea is. If it is something that is written - copyright it - print it and put it in an envelope and mail it to yourself - registered at the post office in a sealed envelope - and don't open it when you get it. Make sure the post office stamps the date - this proves you have claim to the work.

In terms of an idea for a product, you could try to get a patent - that would involve a lawyer, ideally. Search the Internet for NDA (non-disclosure agreement) and before you tell anyone your idea, ask them to sign it. Make a copy - it has to have the date on it.

That should also help. Beyond that, get references about people before you give out any information. Good luck with your idea.

Copyright or patent it first before you show anyone. Also, put the idea in an envelope and mail it to yourself and DO NOT OPEN it.

That will be proof that you had the idea at that specific time (the date stamp on the postage).

Go to this site www.uspto.gov and get a patent or trademark or the copyright office to protect your idea. If its valuble enough and someone steals it you will have to litigate the matter but having some documentation like the a patent, tm or copyright is a good way to prove your case (provided of course you have $20,000- $30,000 to litigate the thing).

If it is written down, file to copyright it before you sell it. If it is an item, get a Patent.

Any attorney dealing with commercial paper should be able to assist you with this process.

Good luck with your idea!
