How do I find out about drug administration regarding ensuring the nurse checks the patients name, date of birth, and hospital number? I've looked on the code of proffesional conduct & administration of drugs. Can anyone recommend some excellent websites?

You are looking for Standards of Care.

Each facility will have it's own individual policy for what must be checked, but they all basically follow the same standard of care. Right patient, right medication, right dose, right route, right time.

Checking the patients hospital # is time-prohibitive - it is generally name band and date of birth. My norm is read the name band, and ask them to tell me their date of birth. This assures that the band on the patient is accurate.
Medication safety is a big initiative right now, and many hospitals are changing over to a scanner system (sorta like Wal Mart) in an effort to decrease errors.

Try looking under the requirements mandated by the Food & Drug Administration or possibly Prescription Drug Administration laws!

Best wishes!

I don't know where you are, but I'm in Penna., where
those checks are normal procedure.
If you've witnessed drugs being given without these checks,
you should report it to the hospital's or nursing home's
charge nurse or administration.

You can sit and watch us when we give drugs, we have nothing to hide.....
If you have a complaint, register it with the nurse in charge of the ward and report it to the NMC as well.
