SUPPOSE the chargers did not return brady's interception, thus not committing the fumble that cost them the game. SUPPOSE they ended up beating the colts, and eventually winning the superbowl against the bears. SUPPOSE after all this accomplisment, the departures and dissent among the coaching staff remains the same. Would marty still be out of a job?

i guess the best way to avoid any negative publicity would be for the gm to not renew marty's contract. i think he still had 1 year left, no?

No matter what San Diego did this year I believe Marty would’ve left SD.
Personality conflicts with the GM would make Marty leave for elsewhere anyway.
No matter how good the coaching, some players EGO will STILL lead the player to make mistakes that SHOULDN’T BE MADE.
It’s SOOO easy to blame the coach(es).
I’m quite certain McCree knew to go down with the ball after making the INT but his ego told him to try to run it back and be more of a hero than what he COULD HAVE BEEN had he just downed the ball after the INT and let the O run out the clock.
Who knows, that play may HAVE cost SD the SuperBowl.
It DEFINITELY cost them that game.

Yes Marty would still be out of a job. Then he would be the best Coach to win a Superbowl and be fired. Currently that record was 13-3, he would have pushed it to 14-2. It comes down to this. Marty and the GM had no relationship. Pick one is what it was going to come down to. Marty said this would be his last year basically. So guess who gets picked.
Does Vermil and Parcells sound familiar. Both finished 13-3(different season clearly) and won the Superbowl then were fired by the Rams and Giants respectively.

It would have been difficult to fire him should that have happened. However, Marty and the GM have been at odds with each other for some time. The GM was looking for an excuse to fire Marty so that he would not look like a butt. I think Marty would have been fired either way. GMs have to let the coach coach and this means letting the coach hire his own staff. The GM or owner running the entire show hasn't worked well for the Cowboys for some time now so I don't expect the Chargers to be any better off.

of course not. You can't fire a coach for winning a superbowl. That would be LUDACRIS. The reason he was fired was because of this years mishaps, and of the previous years. Apparently AJ Smith (GM of Chargers) believed that Marlon McCree wasn't coached well enough to know to go down with the ball instead of trying to return it. Critics also believe that a well coached team doesn't commit a devastating roughing the passer penalty on a crucial play in the crucial part, late in the game. Personally, I don't think Marty should have been fired.

Yes, he still had a year off. But "his boss" and him were arguging alot over the past few months. Their latest and last argument was about hiring a new coaching staff. Marty wanted to hire his brother. All, in all, its still a bussneiss and if you and your boss can't get along, then someones gonna be jobbless, regardless of the success in the past. In this case, Marty was on the short end of the stick.

Seems like it. The problem was not a new one and had been brewing for some time. Seems like the departure of the 4 coaches was the signal to the owner to just clean the entire house.

no way a super bowl winning coach loses his job...the general manager would look like garbage if he did that, as it is he does anyway...marty and the g.m. have always been on bad terms...blame the coaches all you want, when a team loses...its the players. I lived in San Diego for years, nice place but NO MAJOR SPORT SUCCESS...

Wouldn't make any difference if they'd won. The Chargers got rid of Marty Schottenheimer & that's that!

No he would be coach. And if the Falcons would have won the Superbowl, Mora Jr. would still be the coach. You could apply this to any coach. Only Jerry Jones would fire someone after they won the Superbowl.

No, if that one play had been different (ie, batting the ball down or falling on it) they would have run the gauntlet and been SB champs.
I believe that it would have taken a lot more for Cam & Wade to be persuaded away and Marty would definately have stayed.
