I have had this exact problem on PC. Windows update caused the process SVCHOST to run at 100%

I just let the update process complete. I left the PC on overnight and by the time I woke up the update had finished and the processor usage was back to normal. I guess it took hours to complete but it sorted it self eventually. This is worth a try before reformatting etc etc

Note:- This happened on a clean install, just after I had reinstalled XP. To this day I dont know what caused the problem...twas very strange

If you believe that this new update is the cause of your problems then you may have either a virus or a problem with the update.
Try running an anti-virus and if that doesnt turn anything up then reinstall the OS or remove the update via "add remove programs". Also, check to see if this is a hardware problem, maybe your CPU has burnt out or it will if it is constantly a 99%

Ew, you got some major issues. SVCHOST is the processes that are split up between your services on your computer. They are not supposed to be taking more then 5% of your cpu load at heavy usage..

If it is svchost this is a necessary windows component, if it is scvhost as you put then it may be something malicious (or just a spelling mistake on your part). do a full antivirus scan and adware scan to check for anything malicious.

to ensure that windows components are intact go to start run and run sfc /scannow this will check windows components are fine, you may need to insert your windows install CD to do this.

Then get rid of Microsoft Update. I would also recommend getting more RAM and upgrading your processor to a faster and better one.

Good luck!

Go to the Control Panel Add/Remove programs and remove the update. Before you reload it get someone who knows more to see if your computer can handle it.
