I took a test in January as I was appx 10 days late and when I went to the doctors I was given a EDD of 5-6 weeks going off the first day of my last period which would have been 9 Dec 06. However, having thought I was now 9 weeks pregnant I have recently been for my Early Ultrasound and they believe I may only be 4-6 weeks, it was hard to tell as it was so small (sac 12mm and crl 2.2mm) and they could not see the heart beat. Could this be right as I am now freaking out that something could be wrong. They have arranged for me to go back in 2 weeks where they said it should have grown alot since then and I should be able to see more. Has anyone else been through this? Should I be worried? Why are the dates taken from the beginning of your last period when in fact if all of this is correct then I conceived at the end of my cycle which is putting me appx 3-4 wks out and I'm now having to go through all of this anguish!

Just to clarify a couple of points, I am regular so I knew the date of my last period. I was originally told by the doctor 5-6 weeks but by the time I had my early scan going on that reckoning I would have been 9 weeks. however it is only now after having the scan that they are saying 4-6 weeks which is why I can't understand why the EDD was so far out. I know appx the week of when it should have happened as I work away so any other time was not possible but even then, they still say first date of last period. Could the doctor on the reckoning of first day of period be as far as 3-4 weeks inaccurate?

Try not to worry too much...when I found out I was pregnant with our 2nd baby I freaked out because I had an x ray at the dentist with no lead bib and was worried that it would have harmed the baby..anyway when I went for my 18 week scan(that's the soonest they do it round here!)they put my dates back 3 weeks and it turns out I wasn't even pregnant when I had the x ray!I had taken the pregnancy test at home on gut feeling and must have only been days pregnant when I found out..if you have an irregular cycle or even if not ovulation doesn't always occur on the 14th day and that's what delivery dates are based on.Its a bit silly really because we aren't machines and I think this happens quite alot.I am sure your baby is fine and its just your dates out.
Pregnancy tests are so sensitive these days they can detect very slight pregnancy hormones and that is why you can get a very early positive result.
hope that puts your mind at rest!..oh and I did the same thing with no.3!!(excluding the x ray part!!)

Doctors use the first day of your lmp for dating pregnancy because it's very hard to know when a woman actually conceives. I had an ultrasound at 5 weeks and there was only a black sac. I had another u/s exactly 2 weeks later at 7 weeks and what a difference. Not only did I see the baby, but I saw the heartbeat flicker on the monitor. I had been ttc for several months and my cycles were regular, so there was never any question as to how far along I was, so I'm sorry that I can't give you any advice there. I know the next two weeks will be difficult. I had a prior miscarriage, so I was not going to be at ease until I knew there was a baby and heartbeat. I just want to reassure you that so much can happen in two weeks. You will not believe how much that baby grows in the first trimester. I wish you all the best!

I've had 4 pregnancies, and I always went off the last day of my last period, and I was never wrong. When I had my babies technology was nothing like it is today so we had to rely on methods proven over many generations. But I find that my methods work even with the births of my grandchildren. The one thing I regret though is the fact that we didn't have ultrasound in those days. We could have saved a fortune in baby clothes. By the way, don't worry about a thing, I'm quite sure everything is quite normal and that you are going to give birth to a beautiful healthy baby sooner or later.

They estimate your delivery date as being 40 weeks from the first day of your last period. Don't worry, there is not much difference in the ultrasound calculation and the Doc's calculation. He said 5-6 wks the ultrasound said 4-6. Try not to stress, this is not good for you or your baby. In two more weeks they will be able to calculate better. In the meantime, say a little prayer and thank God for your baby and a good healthy pregnancy. I will pray for you too. Peace!

First of all relax and take a deep breath. I have been through the same situation. It turned out okay in the end. I really do not know why they count from your last period. I was always confused by that since your "prime" is about the 11-17 day mark after your period. Just relax and wait. At your next appointment you will more than likely see or at least hear a heart beat.

Good Luck!

hell if the docs were right abt when i became pregnant then my morning sickness started BEFORE i was evn pregnant! lol. i think they take it from the date of ur last period cuz its the one last day they can say 100% that u were not pregnant...i duno really. in the scans at ur stage they are looking for something abt 1cm big!! thats why they culdn't find a heartbeat or the baby, don't worry! at the next scan u suld b able 2 c summat more, but not alot. its when u get ur 12 week scan that u REALLY see summat...mine looked like a peanut so we called her Pea until we knew what we were having. and at the 20 weeks scan it REALLY looks like a baby! i started crying cuz u culd c a foot n all her toes...lol..anything'll set me off tho!
anywayz, good luck n stop worrying! ur baby's too small 2 b seen on a scan really, n they can't check for a heatbeat cuz they can't hear a dicky bird yet!

It goes off of the first day of your last period. It's the 'cycle' and that's why. At the time of ovulation, if you become pregnant you are technically already about two weeks pregnant. It's strange, I know.

Because of your last cycle, I would say that you are 9wks and 3dys. However, if you had a cycle around the 6th of Jan you'd be about 5wks and 3 days.

Although I'm not sure that it's possible to not notice a cycle.

it could be that you ovulated late that month and at this stage its still very hard to see even the heart beat, been there and had to have emergency scan done at 6 weeks as I was bleeding and at that time the heart beat was there but very very faint, hold out for the 2 weeks, not easy but it'll put your mind at rest in the end, my little one is 4 now and driving me totally crazy but worth all the heartache in the begining. good luck!

Your due date is supposedly calculated from the first day of your last cycle. Even though we may not think that the doc knows everything, usually the scan is pretty accurate. Good Luck!
